Trusted Reviews. We didn't take too kindly to the Microsoft Side. Winder mouse. While it boasted plenty of features, such as on- the- fly sensitivity adjustment, real- time macro- recording and, let us not forget, vertical(!) 'back' and 'forward' buttons it fell short on the ergonomics front. Sadly its successor, the X5, was little better. Luckily, with the X6 keyboard, Microsoft managed to save the Side. Winder brand some face by being very good. And the X8 mouse proves that to be a trend, rather than an anomaly.

Since making to switch to Windows 7 from Vista, I've noticed my Sidewinder X8 mouse tracking very erratic sometimes, and it starting to happen a lot more now.
The most obvious reason why the X8 succeeds where its Side. Winder predecessors failed is immediately apparent. The X8 sports a much more ergonomic design, eschewing the strange 'hump' of previous models in favour of a smoother design which fits the hand more comfortably.
Having used the X8 almost every day for close to a month now, I'm more than pleased with the complete lack of aches and pains in my wrist and hand. Assisting this improved hand position, the vertically mounted navigation buttons are now flat and angled inwards towards the thumb - a huge improvement over the rounded, protruding examples on the previous Side.
Winder mice. As a result, it is now possible to use both with only small movements of one's thumb, without repositioning it - something the previous design didn't cater for. The four- way scroll wheel's metal surface offers plenty of grip and there's a reassuring 'click' while scrolling, although sideways movement feels a tad less secure - certainly enough to cause some annoyance. Three dpi- changing buttons are positioned just behind the scroll wheel. When pressed, these light up temporarily and the sensitivity assigned - via Microsoft's Intelli.
Point software - is displayed on the mouse's LCD screen, just above the thumb position.

Review: Microsoft Sidewinder X8 gaming mouse. Update: the skipping issue is a mousepad problem, I have confirmed on two mice.
Too bad the best mousepads are cloth! Wheel still sucks. It was late last year when Microsoft started really putting more juice into their Sidewinder lineup. With the X6 keyboard and X5 mouse, they showed a new aesthetic and commitment to hardcore gamers. But driver files showed an upcoming X8 mouse . Most of the findings are in the nice long video review below, but I. It has a little LCD screen for displaying the DPI or a couple icons, but to be honest it doesn.
You have to hold it pretty far up on the thing, which is against my instincts, but once I got used to that, the feel of the mouse improved. The thumb buttons are great and well- balanced. It does it all perfectly, and it. The charging cable is, and I mean this, the best charging solution I. The tiny, light connector gets picked up by magnets in the mouse.
It works perfectly every time and I want to give Microsoft serious props for it. The wireless performance was excellent; having the receiver right there ensures that there is no interference from your desk or components as there may be when the receiver is stuck into the back of your PC. I never felt any lag at all and I don. Not the most elegant solution, and like the macro on- the- fly button, it.
First, the scroll wheel. The buttons in it are useless to me because the whole operation is so squishy. It makes more sense for an interface like that to maybe have a . I much prefer either Logitech.
It jumps all the time. It makes little jumps of about 1. It did this at all DPIs, all sensitivities, whether it was plugged in or not, and no matter where I put the puck. I had to cut my review period of the thing short because it was bugging me so much.
I got a regular retail mouse to review just like you might get at a store, so this is final hardware. The drivers have been out for months. If this is a problem with every Sidewinder mouse, it. Okay, whatever, nobody.
DPI not super helpful? Well, I can tweak it so it works out.
But the jumping cursor? Now I say again that it. The mouse I got, while nice in theory, is simply too annoying to actually use.
